Brief Overview
ZINC CHLORIDE name of chemical compounds with the formula ZnCl2 (including its hydrates). Usually, they are colorless or white, and are highly soluble in water. The basic zinc chloride in particular is hygroscopic. Hence, the packaging for this white salt has to be protective against any moisture, including the one that might come from air.
Manufacturing Process
The easiest way to prepare zinc chloride is a reaction of zinc and hydrogen chloride (gas form). Because sometimes the zinc chloride is not pure, it can be purified in the process called recrystallization.
Metallurgy
Zinc chloride reacts with metal oxides to give derivatives of the idealized formula MZnOCl2. It means that the surface of the metal is clean because passivating oxides are dissolved.
Textile and paper processing
Highly concentrated zinc chloride solutions are used to dissolve cellulose, starch and silk. In the textile industry it is used as a fireproofing compound in textile refersheners.
Organic chemistry
Zinc chloride is used in the chemical industry in the synthesis of organic compounds. It acts as the catalyst of these reactions, hence it is known as one of the Lewis acids.
